Blogiversary Guest Post: Kathryn R. Biel, author of Live for This
Congrats to Bethany at One Book at a Time on your first Blogaversary!
It's a lot of time and commitment to read, review, and blog consistently. It's something I haven't been able to keep up with, so I have the utmost admiration and amazement for those who do!
My name is Kathryn R. Biel and I tell stories of resilient women. I'd say I'm primarily a women's fiction writer, but apparently I refuse to be put into one genre box. I write what I'm inspired to write, and sometimes it's comedy, sometimes it's drama, sometimes it's romantic suspense. My latest book, Live For This, is dramatic women's fiction/contemporary romance, while my work in progress, Made for Me, is chick lit.
I read how I write. I have to go with what I'm in the mood to read. Like when I want a good historical romance, if the story doesn't have a Marquis or Duke, it's not gonna cut it. Similarly, when I'm prepared, I can read more emotional books. I do have to mentally prepare myself. Like with The Fault in Our Stars. I looked at the book and hemmed and hawed about it for a while before I committed to it. Then, I read it in just over 24 hours, although it took almost as long for that for the swelling around my eyes to go down. I'm trying to prepare myself to read JoJo Moyes' Me Before You, but I sort of know how it ends, so I need to be emotionally ready for that. Until I am, in the TBR pile it sits.
In terms of my writing, I like not fitting into one box. It gives me freedom to go where my story takes me. Sort of like going to an all you can eat buffet, but without that uncomfortable feeling afterward, and you probably won't need to unbutton your pants. Not that that's ever happened to me. But I digress...
I enjoy telling stories of different women, in different settings, with a different feel. With my latest book, Live For This, I tackled some pretty heavy issues. When issues are on my mind, I tend to write about them. That, along with a lot of interesting yet random occurrences, are how I get inspiration for my next story. Not gonna lie—the internet helps with that too. I see a story, then start thinking, and pretty soon I'm writing about a housewife struggling with depression, a sister's mental illness, the Olympics, or a sexual assault. A common thread in my books is women who find strength from within, rising above the challenges life throws in their way. Sometimes there's so romance along the way, but that's not why these women rise above. Realistic women, in realistic situations, coming out on top.
If you're interested in reading about some of my strong women (just remember, they don't always start that way!), you can find me in the following locations:
