Blogiversary Guest Post: "Everything I know I learned on the Internet" Monique McDonell, author of The Upper Crust Series

Everything I know I learned on the Internet (well, most of it).
I wish that being an author was as easy as writing a book. That is not to say that writing a book is easy at all, because truthfully it isn’t. How many people have you heard say “I have a great idea for a book” or “I’m going to write a book one day”? How many of those people actually write the book? Not many.
That’s not the point. If you want to write a book then you sit down and you write it. It might take you years, or even a lifetime, but in the 21st Century that is the easy part.
These days you need to be a marketing expert to be an author, and it doesn’t matter if you are traditionally published or indie, you still need some marketing chops.
You need to understand branding, author platforms, SEO, blogging, Tumbler, Twitter and Facebook to name but a few things. You need to be able to set up a website and a mailing list and perhaps even a Street Team.  And algorithms – they’re going to come up a lot in conversations. (If you’re anything like me you didn’t become an author because you’re into algebra so yeah, what is an algorithm again?) It’s a lot to take in.
You may not use all this information but you need to absorb it at the outset so that you can then decide which bits are for you and which bits you are going to run away from screaming. You don’t have to do it all but you do probably need to choose what you do wisely.
And here’s the really super annoying thing. Just when you think you have it sorted, the rules will change.
Here’s an example. When I published my first novel Mr Right and Other Mongrels back in May 2012 it was quite a thing to get people to tag your book on Amazon and to like those tags. I’d tag it as chicklit or fantasy or horror and then others liked/agree that the book was indeed in that category. That helped people find your book (visibility) in the Amazon shop. Yeah, that system doesn’t exist anymore. Hours wasted.
Want another one? I have around 1250 people who have liked my Facebook Author Page. That did not happen overnight and it did not happen by accident. That took a whole strategy. That took hours of time. I’m going to presume that at least half those people might have wanted to see what I posted from time to time. In 2014 Facebook moved the goalposts. Now a mere handful of those people who signed up and said they were interested in my books and ramblings about coffee see my posts. You probably don’t see them most of the time even if you want to. Now Facebook wants me to pay to send this information to people. And even then it doesn’t reach most of them.
How did I know I needed to tag books? How did I know I needed a Facebook Author page? The internet. And how did I learn I needed to relearn this stuff, the same way.
When I published my first book as an indie author I knew exactly NO ONE in real life, who had gone the indie route. I was alone in a big, book-filled universe flailing about for answers. I did pretty well considering.
I found Facebook Groups to join who have given me advice and helped promote my books. I got myself on Twitter and learned the dos and don’ts of negotiating that space. I have a blog and I know about Price Pulsing as well. (It sounds quite sexy but it’s not.) I have finally got my butt in gear and I have a newsletter mailing list – man I wish I’d gotten onto that before Facebook changed things up.
It’s tiring for authors these days. Lots of us are sweet, introverted people who like to read and drink beverages of the hot and cold varieties while chatting about said books.  We can’t do that and sell books ,so  mostly they’re just like me and they keep pushing forward and adapting to the changes.
I’m glad the internet is there to help me. Being a writer isn’t the lonely and isolated pursuit of sitting in a garret it used to be. Though, I will say, despite the success stories you read about (again more than likely on the internet) most authors, both indie and traditional, still struggle to make money.
Some days I would prefer a return to the old days and but most days I take off my luddite hat and embrace the new opportunities out there.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am an Australian author who writes contemporary women's fiction including chick lit and romance. I live on Sydney's Northern Beaches with my husband and daughter, and despite my dog phobia, with a dog called Skip.

I have written all my life especially as a child when I loved to write short stories and poetry. At University I studied Creative Writing as part of my Communication degree. Afterwards I was busy working in public relations I didn't write for pleasure for quite a few years although I wrote many media releases, brochures and newsletters. (And I still do in my day-job!)

When I began to write again I noticed a trend - writing dark unhappy stories made me unhappy. So I made a decision to write a novel with a happy ending and I have been writing happy stories ever since.
I have been a member of the writing group The Writer’s Dozen for eight years. Our anthology Better Than Chocolate raised over $10,000 for the charity Room to Read and helped build a library in South East Asia. I am also a member of the Romance Writers of Australia.
I have written five stand-alone romantic comedies and Any Way You Slice It, and  Any Way You Dream It, Anyway You Fight it and Any Way You Plan It the first four  books in the new Upper Crust series.

Blogiversary Guest Post: Why the blurb no longer does it for me by Bernadette Maycock, author of It Started with a Snub

Why the blurb no longer does it for me
by Bernadette Maycock

In most cases the choosing of a book is done, in the first instance, on the cover. See the cover, exclaim (yes, I do do that!), flick the book over, read the blurb. Or, if online, see the cover (exclaim;)), scroll down, read the blurb. There's a next step though. I have, numerous times, bought or clicked on the basis of the cover alone, or based on the title. Unfortunately not all the books are as they've been ‘advertised.’

A blurb might grab your attention in the way that the cover does, you see a word that jolts you, and so you think it’s definitely the one for you, however blurbs are not indicative of the authors writing, it may not even have been written by the author!

A huge issue can be the voice of the narrator. I have in the past opened up a book to realize straight off the bat that they're a person I wouldn’t, nay couldn’t 'listen' to for a whole story. It could be their language you don't like, and I don’t necessarily mean bad language or slang. Maybe it's too flowery for you, or conversely too harsh. Some people don’t like too much description, they don’t want in-depth coverage of the beauty of the surrounding mountains, or the spray of daffodils that are dancing in a gentle breeze. Conversely, this may be exactly what they want, and they don’t want to be bogged down in dialogue, or storyline. You may find the narrator to be too negative, too positive, too crude.

There’s a lightbulb moment that comes with the times you scroll down and realize that you like the way the narrator is leading you along, or you warm to the main character. Me? I jump straight out, and click ‘buy’, thrilled to have found ‘the one.’

So there you go. A quick flick through a paperback or my favorite, the ‘look inside’ option on Amazon, will do the job. The book may have you within the first few lines, or you may thank your lucky stars you didn’t buy. Either way, a bit of investigation will get you a book that will make  you want to sit down and shut out the world outside so  you can immerse yourself in your new book. Now off you go and enjoy x

Bernadette is also a member of ChicklitChatHQ, another closed group that allows her to eat and breathe chick lit!

She lives in Co. Westmeath, Ireland with her brilliantly out there husband, Keith, and four amazing children- Paul, Conor, Aidan and Brian.

HEATHER GREEN is a fun loving, happy go lucky, twenty-six year old who has remained upright and beaming despite a few wobbles in life. She wears her heart on her sleeve and pins on her thoughts for good measure. We meet Heather as she moves out of her family home to share with four guys, much to the dismay of her long suffering (by his own admission!) boyfriend Graham. We follow her housemates and watch their sometimes funny, sometimes-fraught relationships as they go about their daily lives. Join Heather as she navigates the simple things in life, her inability to remember the code for the house alarm, odd driving habits, general musings on chick flicks, casualties in cooking, as well as her attempts to talk down the “mad farmer with the gun.” Experience comedy and drama as we get to know her family and housemates, and, as an unexpected event finally takes her down, learn what happens when the last people you expected to turn to are actually the ones you need the most.

Blogiversary Excerpt and Giveaway: How to Bake the Perfect Apple Pie by Gina Calanni

How to Bake the Perfect Apple Pie
A scrumptious pie. A long distance guy. 4th of July fireworks guaranteed.
Lauren Hauser has it all…nearly. With a shiny new job and sparkly new engagement ring on her finger, the only thing she’s missing is her gorgeous new fiancĂ© by her side. Should she be worried? Jack’s kisses are as sizzling as always and, sure, long distance is hard but, she and Jack are solid, right?
Of course the stress of planning a wedding—or not—is nothing compared to the stress of baking an apple pie. Because it’s not just any apple pie that Lauren must bake for the 4th of July contest; it’s her grandmother’s famous, award-winning apple pie! Yet Lauren is determined to make this pie her own and a little apple pie should be no problem for the Hauser clan dessert queen…!
But with her new job taking up so much time, a prize pie to perfect and the growing distance between her and Jack, Lauren begins to wonder if she can really have it all… Only one things for sure, there’ll be fireworks this 4th of July!

EXCERPT

But the annual Fourth of July apple pie contest? With real judges? And real bakers? Why would my grandmother want me to do this? Why not Megan? I let out a deep breath. “So tell me about this contest.” Jack pulls me in close and kisses my neck. Cascades of shivers fall over my arms…as if I can think with his lips anywhere on my body! “Um, my grand—” Jack’s lips cover mine and our tongues swirl together. His hands are running up and down my body, gripping and tugging on all of my pleasure points. I’m unraveling into pure joy and we are standing in the spice aisle at my grocery store. I pull back and shake my head.

“Jack, we’re in public.” I eye him and give him a please look. “True, but we’re alone in this aisle.” Jack pulls me close again and kisses me harder as if the seconds being away from my lips created a stronger desire. I meet each twist of his tongue with my own and run my hands over his back. I stop. “Jack, seriously, let’s get our groceries and get out of here.” I turn my attention to the letter and examine the notes. Jack grabs the letter with one hand and my fingers with the other. He guides me down the aisle and into the back of the store. He pushes us through the double doors that lead into the warehouse. “Jack, what are you doing?” My eyes dart all around us. Jack positions me into an aisle of boxes. “This.” Jack reaches behind my head and pulls me to his lips. Our mouths meet and our tongues dance a rapid swirling sensational samba. His hands are roaming all over my body as if he is trying to remember every curve so he can sketch me from memory. My insides are squeezing tight; my breathing is out of control. I’m falling into ecstasy and I don’t care where we are. The only thing I see is Jack: he’s in front of me, connected to me, circling me, with his every touch. “Excuse me, you can’t be back here,” a voice calls out to us. Jack moves me behind him. “Oh, sorry about that, we couldn’t find the cinnamon or anyone to help us, so I thought we would check your stockroom.” “Uh, hon, cinnamon is in aisle three and it’s stocked.” The man clears his throat. “Well then, off to aisle three we go.” Jack leads me out of the stockroom and into aisle three.
I laugh as we stand in front of the cinnamon. “Really?” “Really what?” Jack peers down at me. He rubs his thumb over my chin. “Your lipstick is smeared; you should be more careful with the application.” I shove his arm. He doesn’t move though. He grabs my hand and kisses each of my knuckles. “Lauren, I can’t hold out much longer.” I raise an eyebrow at him. “This was you holding out?” Jack bites my finger. “You don’t want to see me not holding out.” I pull my hand away from him. “Maybe I do.” I toss my hair over my shoulder.

“Let’s get your ingredients.” Jack growls into my ear. Tingles swarm down my neck and over my shoulders like a firework exploding in the sky. “Yes, let’s.” I scan the letter. We’ve got everything except the nutmeg and the apples. I select an organic bottle from the shelf and toss it in our basket. “I just need Granny Smith Apples.” Jack’s eyes are dark with hunger. He whisks me into his arms and kisses me deeply before releasing me and I do my best to follow behind him to the produce section. My legs are wobbling from walking on a cloud of Jack’s love. He grabs a bag of Granny Smith apples and we head to the checkout, eager to get home.

Blogiversary Guest Post and Giveaway: A little about Hilary Grossman, Author of Plan Bea

I’m not ashamed to admit it. I’m pretty naĂŻve and very spontaneous. I dive head first into everything, and worry about the logistics later. I have a major issue with uttering the word no. So I guess it wasn’t shocking that I decided to write my first book, Dangled Carat, on a whim. I had attended a conference about how to turn a blog into a book, and two days later I was sitting at my dining room table compulsively pounding away on my keyboard for hours, barely managing to take bathroom breaks. As I typed at a fast and feverous pace I didn’t give any thought to what would happen if I actually I finished writing the book. After all, it wasn’t the first (or the fifth) time in my life I decided to write a novel…

But I fooled myself. I actually managed to type “the end”.  And that was when panic hit me. I realized I had no idea what to do next.  Thank goodness I had my trusty friend, Google, lead the way. I found a professional editor, I worked with an agent, I assisted with cover designs, I self-published and then I landed a publisher and did it all again….

But Google only teaches you only so much… It never prepared me for the fact that as a result of my books my life would become so much richer.  And no, believe me; money has nothing to do with it. I got a much better gift.

FRIENDS…

I am completely blown away by the people I have met as a result of my writing, like our blog-anniversary girl, Bethany. I “met” her in September of 2014. Dangled Carat had recently been featured on a Goodread’s Chick Lit group.  Just when I had given up on anyone else commenting on the discussion, Bethany wrote, “I'm a little late but I want to join in still!”

And boy did she join in! I remember every time I got an email notification of her posts I would stop everything and immediately log in. Her comments always made me smile. I was very sad when she commented on the final thread. I was afraid our interactions would be over.  But man was I wrong! It was just the beginning.

I don’t remember how it happened, but over time we stopped talking books and started talking life.  We have spent hours communicating via email and social media messages.  And while we have never met in real life, she is one of my dearest friends.

What happened with me and Bethany happened with others as well. Numerous women have reached out to me to ask dating advice. Other girls contacted me to talk about what they were experiencing with their men. After all, dating a commitment-phobic man is pretty common. As their relationships develop and change, they update me.  The other day I was so excited when one of my favorite book bloggers sent me a picture of her engagement ring.

The reaction I have had to Plan Bea has been the same. People have let me know that after reading the book they contacted their estranged mothers to try to repair their relationships.  Knowing my books can make a difference in people’s lives is mind blowing.  And knowing that I am part of people’s lives, I would never have had the opportunity to meet if not for the books, is heart warming.

Have you ever found a friend in a unique way?

We live our entire lives thinking we know those closest to us. But do we ever really?

On the outside, Annabel O'Conner has it all - the perfect husband, two adorable children, an amazing job, and a mother from hell! Just when she gives up trying to regain her overbearing mother's love, an unexpected call turns her world around and makes Annabel question everything she believes about her life.

Could falling in love give a cold, stubborn, and selfish woman a second chance to open her heart back up to her family?

Beatrice Buchanan has spent more years than she can remember distancing herself from everyone close to her. She barely has a relationship with her grandchildren. The only time she manages to have a one way conversation with her daughter is during her weekly fifteen-minute commute to the nail salon. When Bea meets Walter on a cruise she realizes there may be more to life than designer clothes, killer handbags, and impressing the ladies at her posh country club.

As the mother and daughter duo team up to plan "Long Island's wedding of the year" they confront the secrets and lies that have defined them. This humorous emotionally honest women's contemporary fiction novel will tug at your heartstrings and the twist ending will shock you.

"Although a light read, the subject matter was very sad at times and I found myself choking back tears, but in a good way! It was so authentically heart wrenching yet often very funny too. The characters were so well fleshed out and three dimensional - no one was perfect and no one was fatally flawed - like real life. I thought the twist was genius!"  - Meredith Schorr Best Selling Author
