Blog Tour Stop - Excerpt from The Juggling Act by Carol Maloney Scott

EXCERPT
“Claire…are you drooling on the window?”
I jump. “No, of course not. I was just looking out the…holy shit, we’re in the air?” I stare into Justin’s emerald eyes, with the whites as clear as Aidan’s at this ungodly hour. “I didn’t sleep through takeoff!”
“Well, actually you did. I fastened your seat belt and put your phone away, and stowed your tray to the upright and locked position. At one point your head smacked against the window a bit and I reached over with this pillow—”
“Would you like a beverage?” I now notice that the flight attendant has been waiting for me to give my drink order during this exchange.
“I’m sorry, yes, can I have some orange juice, please?” I hate orange juice, but I hate coffee more.
“Hmm…are you sure you don’t need a jolt?” Justin tries to pinch my arm and I flinch, almost knocking over the juice I’ve just been handed. The unamused server suppresses a sigh as she rolls her cart onto the next valued guest. I guess Justin’s hotness only goes so far with a woman who’s expected to be perky at work in the wee hours. I get it…I hide in my office until ten, if I can.
I glare at my traveling partner and he begins rifling through the magazines in front of him. “Did the baby keep you up last night? Wait, I know. You had to give your husband a proper goodbye and that took most of the night.” He smiles and chuckles to himself as he browses through overpriced gadgets that don’t look real.
“Yep, that’s it. So if you will excuse me, I am going to take a small nap. Please wake me if I sleep through landing as well.”
I recline my seat the extra centimeter and close my eyes.
I wish Brandon and I were having wild sex all night to say goodbye. Instead we have been arguing for the past two weeks about babies, adoption, birth mothers, trash cans, nannies, neighbors, music, business trips and a book designed to make me look like an uncaring shrew.
I don’t even know where to begin to solve all of these problems. He said he was sorry for not discussing the e-mail from Chastity, but she did copy both of us. I suppose technically it was my own fault for not opening it, but it was clearly his sole decision to set up a meeting with her before consulting me. He said he would cancel if I was opposed, but he knows damn well that I can’t legally oppose it.
And he’s right that I don’t want to be there, but I also don’t want my son getting to know his birth mother behind my back. Brandon knows how I fear losing Aidan to her, even though that is unrealistic, given her circumstances as a young, single woman struggling to make it. Unless she has found a man and he is encouraging her to…I cut off that train of thought before I need the vomit bag.
I do have a tendency to get worked up over nothing, but on top of Brandon hiding Chastity’s visit, he has been writing a book fictionalizing our lives for the past few months and hasn’t told me. My company is going to publish it, and I didn’t even know about the topic. I recognize that I can be difficult to approach with sensitive matters, but he can’t hide his head in the fucking sand and avoid every issue.
He is younger than me, but eight years is not such a great difference. He is thirty years old, not eighteen. He knows better.
And as if all of that wasn’t enough to fight about, we have a nanny who behaves very inappropriately around my husband when I’m there. Obviously it is worse when I’m at work, and now I will be away all week.
We also have a neighbor with a painfully apparent desire to jump his bones, and he just acts like it’s all fine and I’m overreacting.
Last night was the worst clash of wills when he started in on my trip with Justin. This is a business trip. The person who provides our health insurance and stable income was told that this is a required activity. Does he really think I like leaving Aidan for a whole work week, particularly with our marriage in shambles? I didn’t choose Justin to accompany me on the venture, either.
Sleep is alluding me, so I decide to open my eyes and see what Justin’s doing. He has headphones in and his eyes are shut. He has those impossibly long eyelashes that so many men are blessed with and don’t deserve.
I almost tap him on the shoulder, but decide to leave him alone. We have all week to talk, and I need to pace myself for a bumpy ride.
And I am not referring to airplane turbulence.

Review: The Juggling Act by Carol Maloney Scott

SUMMARY
Now that her dating days are finally behind her, Claire is enjoying a blissful life with her new husband and baby boy. Gone are the drunken nights in impractical shoes, and Internet dates with men who lose their hair…and their pants.

Unfortunately, she’s discovering that life as a married, working mom isn’t turning out to be the perfect happily ever after she dreamed about. She adores her little boy, but her husband’s behavior is about to make him eligible for the Most Disappointing Spouse of the Year Award.

His unwillingness to help around the house and his slacker work ethic are frustrating enough, but the constant parade of beautiful, single women in his life has Claire in a constant state of distress. Didn’t she realize that the cute front man of a popular cover band would attract hot, young women with perfect cellulite-free legs? And whose idea was it to hire the curvy nanny with the sexy accent?

When an unexpected business trip pops up – with a super-hot, much-too-young former love interest, Claire’s own loyalty is put to the test. A publishing conference in Key West may be the ideal escape from her troubles, but will she be tempted by the forbidden in a town full of swingers and breakfast alcohol consumption? And why does everyone they meet think the business colleagues are on their honeymoon?

Scrambling to cover up innocent, but suspicious circumstances, the couple struggles with honesty, loyalty and what to share with each other. As they sink deeper into their marital gloom, will they find their way back to wedded bliss, or finally succumb to the enticement of new…and uncomplicated romance?

MY REVIEW
WOW, where do I begin?  At the beginning I really thought I needed a notebook to understand all the different directions this book was going in.  The characters are so in depth and so vivid - you will feel like you know each and every one to the depths of their beings.

Claire seems to have everything that she could ever want.  The handsome, young, talented husband, the perfect son and (many) cute little doggy children.
But marital bliss isn't quite what it's cracked up to be.  Brandon seems to be at odds with her and they seem to be mad at each other more than happy these days.

Claire works out of the home full-time for a publishing company while Brandon stays home with their son, writes a book and is the front man in a local band.  (I personally got the feeling that he was somewhat of a freeloader most of the day - sleeping in, has a nanny to take care of his son and seems to be flirting more than working.)

The the next piece in the ticking time bomb that is their life - Claire is going on a work trip - with her ex-boyfriend,  Oh boy, this is so not going to end well is it?

Justin is hot, younger than Brandon, kid free and in the same industry that Claire is and clearly in love with her (or at least was), what does Brandon really have to worry about?  (Yea, right)

Don't get me started on the tenant across the street (always wanting to get in Brandon's pants) or the nanny from your worst nightmares? (why would they hire her in the first place?)

The story will have you wondering what will happen next - from hot tub nights in paradise, to karaoke singing, neighbors always dropping by and half-naked nannies, you will not know what hits you until your saying, did that REALLY happen?

Will Claire cheat with her ex-boyfriend?  Will Brandon cheat with the girl across the street or heck the one working in his own house?  Will their marriage stand the test of time or go down like Ben and Jennifer?

Grab a bottle of wine or two (you'll need it) and sit back and take it all in!

WINE SELECTION
I would match this crazy love story with a deep red wine, Toublemaker Red Wine to be specific!

MY RATING
I would rate this crazy whirlwind of a story 4 wine glasses - it had me wondering what in the world would happen next and hating some of the characters along the way!

Guest Post: LAURA MCNEILL, author of CENTER OF GRAVITY

How Important are Amazon Reviews to an Author?

Think back to the last amazing book you read. If you’re like me, being inexplicably drawn into a fantastic story often means the rest of the world comes to a screeching halt until you get to that last page.

You can’t help but care deeply about the characters, you fret about the heroine’s plight, and have a burning urgency to find out what happens next, and next, and next. I’ve been known to skip dinner, stay up half the night, and arrive, bleary-eyed, but happy, book finished, at work the next morning.

My first thought is always to tell my best friends about the amazing novel I just read. I am so fortunate to have a circle of girlfriends, all voracious readers, who share the same enthusiasm for books. It is, most often, from their recommendations, how I decide what’s next in my reading queue.

That said, if it’s a new writer that’s been suggested, or someone I’m unfamiliar with, I often jump on Amazon to scan the novel’s summary, check out the cover, read the author bio, and yes, peruse the reviews—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Certainly, it’s great to see a novel with hundreds of five star reviews (especially if you’re the author) but readers can be a tough audience with high expectations, and not every single book is going to capture the hearts and minds of everyone in the world.

In fact, I prefer to see a smattering of three-star, and even an occasional 2-star review, mixed in with the four and five-star write-ups. That’s balance. That’s life. And it’s reality.

In my opinion, an honest, well-thought out review, short or long, is truly gold to an author. I think that marketer and writer Noah Kagan says it best in this blog post:

“Amazon reviews are most important to your book’s success, arguably more than anything else. As long as your reviews keep going up, your product is being validated.”

Validation, by the way, does not equal perfection. A review means the reader cared enough about the book, or felt strongly enough about the content, to share his or her thoughts.

So are Amazon reviews important? You’d better believe it.

Reviews give potential readers a glimpse inside each book—insight that a publisher’s summary or professionally written blurb can’t offer.
For example, did a book strike an emotional chord too close for the reader’s comfort level? Was the writing lovely, but the reader didn’t quite jive with the genre? Could the book have been shorter? Longer? Did the reader want more dialogue, or greater character depth? Or, if the book was close to perfect, why?

That sort of feedback, those thoughts and ideas, are gold. A smart author will read, weigh, and consider reader reactions to grow and develop his or her craft.

After all, our job, as writers, is to entertain, thrill, delight, and evoke emotion. It is also to transport, inform, and pose tough questions that linger long after the last page is read. It’s our job to leave readers wanting more. And to me, there is no higher calling.

So, readers, let your voice be heard. We’re listening!

Never written an Amazon review? It’s easy, I promise! Here’s how to do it in 3 Easy Steps!

Four jackets of varying weights, enough socks for the entire Confederate Army, three umbrellas, most of the antacid aisle from the local pharmacy, and six pairs of old people sneakers that all look exactly the same.

Have you ever helped your parents pack for a weeklong cruise?

No? I didn't think so. So shut it.

So begins vacation for Summer Hartwell - twenty-six years old, living with her anxiety-ridden parents, and unwillingly booked by her brother on a weeklong cruise to Bermuda. Despite the nightmare of being trapped aboard a cruise ship with Mom and Dad, Summer sees a rare opportunity to fulfill The Prophecy – her mother’s declaration that she will live at home until she gets married. With two thousand passengers onboard, at least one of them must be husband material, right?

The only problem is Graham Blenderman – her brother’s best friend who is joining them for the week, in all of his tall, blonde, extroverted glory. Graham doesn’t believe Summer needs a husband in order to break free from her parents. He thinks she just needs a little bit of nerve. And to Summer’s introverted horror, he’s willing to spend the entire week proving that he’s right.

SUMMARY
[Book 1 in the "Year of the Chick" series. There's a bit of a cliffhanger to end this book, but the sequel addresses any unanswered questions]

An awkward family homecoming at Christmas.

A humiliating public weigh-in, with two judging parents as the audience.

The announcement of a deadline for arranged marriage doom.

And that's just the first two chapters.

In "Year of the Chick," Romi Narindra must find love before her parents find her a husband (a seemingly absurd concept that's the norm in many cultures).

To escape her fate, Romi wades through the waters of secret-dating, where self-consciousness is at an all-time high, and experience at an all-time low. It's the sort of thing that would turn almost anyone into a man-crazy freak with romance tunnel-vision, and that's exactly what happens to her. All the while, a lack of inspiration in her corporate job leads Romi to her love of writing, in what quickly becomes a man-quest play-by-play.

From whiskey-breath scum bags to uni-brow creeps and everything in between, Romi and her wingmen come up empty time after time.

And that's when she meets a fellow writer. On the Internet.

So will it be arranged marriage doom, or an Internet affair that's not as creepy as "To Catch a Predator"? Time will tell in the "year of the chick," a twelve-month quest to find love.

Tick-tock.

A night of magic turns into a night of murder.

It's Halloween night and the normally unhappy co-workers of the Straker Toy Company are eagerly looking forward to the celebration of their tyrannical boss' fiftieth birthday. None more so than Grace Holliday. After all, it's not every day she gets invited to the annual costumed bash at the Dragon's Lair, the premier magic theater in Manhattan.

What promises as a night of magic and mystery, quickly turns into a night of mayhem and murder when the boss' equally tyrannical wife dies on stage.

According to the police, it was an obvious suicide. Now it's up to Grace to discover which one of her co-workers pulled off the trick of the year before she becomes the killer's next victim.

BLOG TOUR STOP: Excerpt from Peri in Progress by Cat

SUMMARY
You know what they say about best-laid plans... After a disastrous thirty-first birthday party where she gets stood-up by a man she isn't supposed to be dating, Peri McKenna decides it's time to change what hasn't been working-which is pretty much everything. Her love life is going nowhere fast, she's bored to tears by a job that makes her the office pariah, and the lifelong junk food addiction that used to be somewhat quirky is now positively problematic. To top it all off, her newly-purchased home is falling apart and wishful thinking hasn't done much to fix the leaky roof. It's time be an adult now that she's officially 'thirty-something.' But when the first step of Peri's self-improvement plan backfires, she starts to wonder if change might be overrated. Enter Milo Preston, an up-and-coming chef who's in town to take over a local restaurant. When Peri and Milo begin working together, she finds it hard to ignore his easy charm and captivating emerald-green eyes. Since Milo is her best friend's estranged brother, Peri has to keep reminding herself that he is completely off-limits. As they grow closer, Milo introduces Peri to new foods, the joy (and pain) of jogging, and makes her think her luck might finally be turning. But when the past catches up with them, Peri finds herself back at square one. Will she be able to sort herself out-or will the roof cave in on her once and for all?

EXCERPT
By the time the Messina Grill closed its door at eleven, I was ready to keel over. My feet and back were sore and my head was buzzing with all the information Harriet had given me. I’d made a ton of mistakes and messed up orders, but she still wanted me to come back the following day. Part of me hoped she’d fire me after the end of my shift. Being a waitress was hard and I had a newfound respect for every waiter and waitress who’d ever served me food. But working at the Grill was doing what it was meant to do—it distracted me and I hadn’t thought about Declan or Frost Financial the entire time I was there.
“Heading home?” Milo asked, coming out of the kitchen. He pulled out a chair and started putting on bright red sneakers.
I nodded. “Harriet says I need to learn the menu by tomorrow.” I waved the folded up paper in the air. I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to tell the difference between grilled swordfish and tilapia or distinguish between couscous and quinoa.
“I can help you study while we make our way back home,” Milo said. “I pretty much know that thing by heart. What do you say, neighbor?”
“I don’t know. I think I need to keep my eyes on the road. My luck has been a bit iffy lately and the last thing I need is a car accident.”
Milo finished putting on his sneakers and jumped to his feet. “Oh. I ran here, so I figured you might like to join me.”
“You ran?” I asked. The Grill wasn’t too far from his mother’s house, but I couldn’t imagine why Milo would have to run to work. “Did your car break down or something? You could have asked me. I would have driven you.”
He shook his head and smiled. “Thanks. But I don’t own a car. I like running. It helps me clear my head.”
And, as evidenced by his muscles, it helped him stay in shape as well. I guess you have to when you make cream sauces on a daily basis. “What do you do when it’s raining? Or if you don’t feel like it?”
He laughed and ran a hand through his hair. “I just do it. Sometimes I have to kick myself in the butt, but once my feet start pounding the pavement and the blood starts rushing through my veins, it’s the best feeling in the world.” Wow. I didn’t think anyone could ever make running sound sexy—but Milo had done just that. “Oh, and I wear a jacket if it’s raining. There’s a shower at the back of the break room if you’re wondering how I keep from being sweaty and stinky. Did Harriet show you?”
“No, she didn’t.”
“It’s tiny and the hot water is completely optional—on most days you’re lucky if you get a few drops of warm water—but it does the trick. Although sometimes I feel like skipping the shower and letting Gary enjoy my runner’s aroma.” He winked and flung his backpack over his shoulder. “Are you coming?”
“Umm. Car,” I stammered, pointing to the door that led to the parking lot.
“Right,” he said, heading toward the exit. “I almost forgot. I’ll see you tomorrow, Peri McKenna. You better know my menu by heart or I might just have to hide your keys and make you run with me.”
“Have fun trying,” I called out. There was no way I was going to run. Ever. But even though I wasn’t the one jogging into the dark night, I felt a bit breathless and my heart started to race as I watched Milo leave. I waved good-bye to Sam, grabbed my keys, and got into my car.
Get it together, Peri. You need to focus on learning the menu, not the man cooking the food. And stop picturing Milo cooling off in the shower after his morning run.

Review - First & Goal by Laura Chapman

SUMMARY
When Harper Duquaine’s no-nonsense approach to work unintentionally ruffles the wrong feathers at her new job, she joins her co-workers’ fantasy football league to prove she can hang with the guys. Only problem: she doesn’t know a sleeper from a keeper (or any of the other lingo thrown her way).

Embroiled in a world of lineups, stats, and trades, Harper’s quest to make nice topples when her competitive streak emerges. And her promise to herself that she’ll be a strong, independent woman and leave the drama and heartache behind is seriously tested when she catches the attention of her two biggest competitors: J.J., a local celebrity determined to win a fantasy championship, and Brook, the mild-mannered coach who seems too good to be true. Both threaten her resolve to remain single… and, more importantly, her chances at winning the prize pool.

With a slew of conflicting advice in her real and fantasy worlds, Harper must figure out how to play the game and come out a winner.

MY REVIEW
First of all, what did it take me so long to read this?  That was a total fumble on my part, sorry Laura!
Second, I am IN LOVE with this cover!  It's simple yet gorgeous!
Where do I begin - this story has a little bit of everything - Fantasy Football (which I have called Fairy Football in the past haha), love, family, and DRAMA for days!  Perfect Touchdown if you ask me!
Harper has become one of my favorite character's in 2016, she is smart, funny, not afraid of a challenge, goal oriented, and knows a little about football!
When she arrives at the dealership she is all business, she has been sent there to turn it around and she is set on doing just that.  That is until her boss calls her into the office - did he really tell her she is TOO productive?  She needs to relax on the changes that she is making?  So basically he wants her to be a slacker and make friends?  That is insane...and yet entertaining all at the same time!
And what better way to fit in with the good ole boys network, join their Fantasy Football League!  Boy does she have her work cut out for her, she knows her Packer's, but will that really help?

Football aside, she learns which co-workers are trying to get in her pants, which she can trust to save her, and maybe which to fall in love with?

You will not be disappointed with this sexy, witty, and dare I say football oriented romantic comedy (do those words really all fit together?)!

Sit back, grab a beer, watch a little football and watch the sparks fly!

BEER SELECTION
MY RATING
I was in love with the story line and characters from the get-go!  I recommend this book to all Rom-Com readers even if football isn't your thing, you will LOVE it!  5 wine glasses all the way!

Review - A Miracle at Macy's by author Lynn Marie Hulsman

SUMMARY
One lost dog. Two lonely hearts. A Manhattan Christmas full of magic.
Shy homebody Charlotte is planning her usual quiet Christmas celebration: Turkey for two for her and her beloved pet dog Hudson. Only, this year, little Hudson decides to take matters into his own paws and give his favourite human a holiday adventure she’ll never forget.
When Hudson runs away the week before Christmas, Charlotte is devastated. She’d rescued him from the trash years before and gave him a place in her home – and her heart. But with the help of uptight Englishman Henry, Charlotte ends up on a magical treasure hunt around Manhattan to find her furry, four-legged bestie.
Spotted in Central Park as one of Santa's Little Helpers, or last seen in the arms of a supermodel in Times Square, Hudson leads Charlotte and Henry on a very merry dance around the Big Apple, where love, (or should that be Christmas?!) actually is all around.
MY REVIEW
My belief in the true Christmas spirit has been renewed with this lovely holiday read.
The story begins when Charlotte is deciding how to spend another quiet Christmas with her beloved Hudson, a cute little pup that rescued her.  He truly came into her life at the right time when they both truly needed each other.  He a lonely puppy with no place to call home and she a lonely young woman with few friends and no real family to rely on.
(I fell in love with Huddie from the beginning, he has me wondering where I can find a little guy just like him for me and my crazy kids!)
Hudson loves to get out on the town whenever he can "convince" Charlotte to take him.  Charlotte would rather stay in and test recipes and cook some of her own.  Huddie has a mischievous plan up his cute little sweater sleeve.  A wild and crazy trip around New York from the Empire State Building to Macy's at Harold Square!
On a side note: I absolutely love the descriptions of New York City, I have been many times but nit at Christmas, after reading this book, it's a MUST DO on my bucket list.  NYC at Christmas!
Then it happens...Hudson runs away while taking Selfies with Elves!  Charlotte has never let him go in their life together and this one time turns into her worst nightmare!  Hudson is gone...She's panicking...What is she going to do?
Her Aunt, who has been her guardian for many years, sends over her best assistant, Henry, to save the day.  (Or what she thinks will take a day, no so much).  Charlotte has met Henry before and did not take a liking to him whatsoever!  Now she must spend day and night with him?  At least he's not bad on eyes!
They have crazy adventures along the way, set up social media accounts for the search, and befriend the NYPD and so much more!
You will be sitting on the edge of your comfy chair what they will get into next!
Grab a bottle of wine and sit back and enjoy the ride that is NYC at Christmas!
WINE SELECTION
For the lovely holiday season, I would go with a bottle of Sangria, Skinny Girl Sangria that is!
MY RATING
I loved this book from page one and did not want to put it down!  5 glasses all the way!  Happy Holidays!

SUMMARY
Life doesn’t happen on a schedule, there are no deadlines in love, and age is just a number.

On the eve of her thirty-ninth birthday, Maggie Piper doesn’t look, act, or feel much different than she did at twenty-nine, but with her fortieth birthday speeding toward her like a freight train, she wonders if she should. The fear of a slowing metabolism, wrinkling of her skin, and the ticking of her biological clock leaves Maggie torn between a desire to settle down like most of her similarly aged peers and concern that all is not perfect in her existing relationship. When a spontaneous request for a temporary “break” from her live-in boyfriend results in a “break-up,” Maggie finds herself single once again and only twelve months from the big 4.0.

As Maggie reenters the New York City dating jungle, suitors present themselves quickly, but who is “The One?” Is he a sexy coworker, one of many bachelors at a speed-dating event, or is he the man she already set free? How do you know? Her fun-loving friends and supportive family, including meddlesome “no-filter” Aunt Helen, eagerly share their (often unsolicited) opinions, but Maggie is determined to find her own way, even if she falls on her face—repeatedly.

Everyone in North Salem thinks they know Jessie Quinn. She is the town’s quintessential girl next door. The woman you can always turn to when you need a helping hand. Nobody knows that she’s spent years overcoming the emotional scars left by her last boyfriend.

As a single dad and task force officer with the FBI, Mack Ellsbury moves back to North Salem to be closer to his family, not to find love. Then Jessie Quinn returns to his life. Soon Mack no longer sees Jessie as the quiet girl he once tutored in high school but rather the woman he is falling in love with.

Mack’s love helps Jessie erase the scars she’s carried around for so long, but when his ex-wife decides she wants reconciliation, their relationship is put in jeopardy.

Mia James almost had it all…
At thirty, she was a successful photographer with the craziest but most loyal friends in the world and a wonderful life in a picturesque village. The only things missing were a husband and a brood of kids. Love happens when you least expect it, her mom always said.
An appointment to show her photography portfolio brought her front and center with Jack Barnes, a gorgeous, successful Manhattan businessman. Mia was smitten, and they married less than a year later. Unfortunately, the marital bliss she craved never showed up.
Jack, the controlling absentee husband, had a secret: someone else was occupying his mind and bed. Mia had no idea until a chance sighting revealed the real Jack with his mystery woman.
Payback was definitely in order and way overdue. With a little help from her friends and a lot of Merlot, Mia was on a mission to take Jack down.
With hilarious speed bumps, hiccups, and crazy calamities along the way, Mia’s ridiculous plot for payback turned into a chance for unexpected friendships and real love.
